The taste of a second chance

When Vanessa talks about cooking, something lights up in her eyes. It’s different from when she talks about her kids, her husband, or her home. It’s a childlike passion.

Her journey didn’t begin in a culinary institute or a professional kitchen. It began watching her father cook on weekends. Those moments were especially meaningful since she rarely saw her parents during the week because of their work schedules. What started as a simple daddy daughter tradition became something more. It sparked a passion. From a young age, Vanessa understood that a shared meal could be more than physical sustenance. It could nourish the soul.

Years later, she moved with her husband and two children to San Antonio de Padua in San Juan de Lurigancho, Lima, Peru. When they arrived sixteen years ago, the community looked very different. The hills, now filled with colorful homes, were once just dust and rock. There were no stores, soccer fields, or community kitchens.

They considered leaving. Lima was supposed to offer opportunity and community, but without the financial means to move elsewhere, they stayed.

Little by little, they built their home. Little by little, they found community.

Years later, when Make a Miracle launched Star Kids Club in San Antonio, Vanessa began bringing her children each week. As the organization grew and expanded its programs, new opportunities opened up for her too.

She became a Second Chance Scholarship student, a program designed to help parents and working adults complete one year career degrees and access better job opportunities.

With that support, Vanessa enrolled in a culinary program. For the first time, the knowledge she had gained in the kitchen took professional shape. She learned techniques, cost management, and how to build a sustainable business.

In January 2025, she graduated with a degree in gastronomy.

For Vanessa, Make a Miracle didn’t just support her children through Star Kids. It opened a door she never imagined for herself. It gave her the confidence to pursue her own goals and the tools to turn a lifelong passion into something real.

Today, Vanessa uses her talents to give back. She teaches baking classes to kids in Make a Miracle’s kitchen and says those classes are helping prepare her for the day she opens her own restaurant.

For now, she has turned her home into a local hotspot for ceviche, tamales, and custom orders. Everything she makes sells out.

Behind every dish are years of learning, resilience, and perseverance. The same care her father poured into weekend meals now flavors everything she creates.

And now, thanks to the Second Chance Scholarship program, Vanessa has something she didn’t have before: opportunity. With her degree in gastronomy, she has the training and credibility to grow her business and keep building toward her dream.
